The Lockdown Trilogy

3 short documentaries made entirely from home

The world closed down in the beginning of 2020. Restrictions, lockdowns and other measures created images we never could imagine would become reality.

The world seemed to open up again slowly but this came with strict rules and regulations. Filmmakers and citizens captured many new and surreal situations.

The pandemic was everywhere in the second half of 2020. And the longer-term impact of the lockdowns on society was also becoming more clear every day.

The Project

Jeroen Stultiens - Filmmaker Lockdown trilogy

This project started as a way of keeping myself busy and creative during the strict lockdown period in spring (for two months we were not allowed to leave our house in Spain!). I gathered social media footage that people were posting and wanted to create something new with these clips, which resulted in a 10-minute poetic documentary about the global lockdowns. As the year progressed the situation and images became more surrealistic every day and they inspired me to create two sequels.

After downloading over 1000 clips, a selection of these ended up in the three short documentaries LOCKDOWN, UNLOCKED and LOCKED OUT.
The social media clips that I ended up using come from 58 countries an they tell short stories of global life around the Covid-19 pandemic. The images flow smoothly and I highly recommend you immerse yourself in the films and watch them with headphones on.

This year everyone has been focusing on the national, regional and (very) local statistics and challenges. And sometimes we lose sight of the unprecedented global similarities and impact the pandemic has had, still has and will have for a long time to come.
I hope this creative project will make you take a step back and see one of the strangest ‘annual reviews’ ever…

Regards,

Jeroen Stultiens
A filmmaker in Spain
